Chris Roach of Dear You has taken the time to do a track-by-track discussion of the bands new EP, Journals.
Journals: This song is about realizing the good in a bad situation, and trying to keep the good memories while letting the bad ones go. In this whole album, this song is the most mature to me, just because I feel like it helped me realize I shouldn’t be mad anymore and I shouldn’t be upset, that everything happens for a reason. Its easily the song I can relate to most at any point in my life, no matter how much I’ve grown since writing the lyrics for this album.
Bridges: I was in a strange place in my mind when I was developing this song lyrically. It’s mostly about finding yourself in a vantage point in a relationship, and almost seeing it fall to pieces as a result. This one is probably one of the oldest on the album, and it had went through many, many changes before we finally were totally happy with it. I absolutely love the energy of it.
If You’d Ask Me To: This song was our single, and what we wanted to lead off with as we moved into this chapter of our lives in the band. Personally, it’s about knowing when to say no, and knowing when you’re being taken advantage of. It actually speaks very plainly of certain events that came about in our lives, and was so interesting to put together. As a band, this was our chance to open up and say that no matter what happens, we know we can stay together and make music that we love.
Annie: This is most definitely the feel good song on the album, and the only song consequently about a girl/relationship. It’s plainly about chasing that one girl who you can’t seem to convince of your worth. This song is meant to be fun, and I hope that everyone can find relation in it
16 Miles: This one is absolutely my favorite song to close with, and we chose it to end the EP because of how much closure it brought us as a group. This whole album has continuity in the lyrics, as well as the general theme. Journals as an album is about losing friends, growing up, and learning not to hold grudges. The title of this track is a hint on the distance between my (Chris) city, and the city the rest of the guys live in. Lyrically, it hints at a personal struggle in your own mind, after seeing something as strong as a friendship whither away, and finding the strength and courage in your closest relationships to stand up and push forward, regardless of consequence.
Check out Dear You doing an awesome cover of Four Year Strong’s “Wrecked ‘Em? Damn Near Killed ‘Em!” We streamed their song “If You’d Ask Me To” a couple of months ago, which you should check out here.
